  Bioelectrochemical characterization of biofilms is usually performed in long-term experiment with microbial fuel cells (MFC). While this setup enables cultivation of fastidious microorganisms from environmental samples, it is not ideal for characterization of single species electroactive microorganisms, due to the difficulty of controlling the working electrode potential. In the last two years, we have extensively tested miniature electrodes for rapid screening of pure bacterial cultures under anodic conditions, aiming to identify novel electroactive strains from wastewater or the environment and to develop a rapid assay for electrochemical characterization of single species biofilms. Here, we present the key outcomes of this systematic work: a) isolation and characterization of novel electroactive strains from anaerobic sediments: two facultative microorganisms usually found in wastewater have been enriched and isolated under anodic conditions. b) electrochemical characterization of a well-known intestinal pathogen, which avail of redox mediators to enhance biofilm formation and virulence; c)a novel inhibition sensor for monitoring of organic pollutants in water, where the current output drop following exposure to the organic solvent is proportional to its concentration; d)characterization of aerobic microbially influenced corrosion in mixed microbial biofilms from seawater, with glucose concentration determininig biofilm activity and corrosion rate. These results from different area of bioelectrochemistry underline how the combination of miniature electrodes and short-term experiments could provide standardized characterization of electroactive microorganisms and a deeper understanding of the electrochemical processes in biofilms.

  七、主讲人简介:

  Enrico Marsili,新加坡南洋理工大学生命科学工程学院助理教授。1997-2004年于意大利罗马大学获得化学工程学学士、硕士、博士学位。研究兴趣包括:生物电化学过程、能源转化、生物薄膜电化学、环境和生物医学应用传感器、金属微生物交互和腐蚀作用后的微生物、金属中的生物降解、纳米材料生物合成、抗菌剂和抗生物薄膜活动中的纳米粒子、生物电化学对病原体的监控。目前Enrico Marsili已在PNAS、ACS-Nano、Green Chem、J. Power Sources、Electrochimi. Acta、Environ Sci Technol、Nanoscale、Chem Comm.等国际主流期刊上发表SCI论文44篇(第一/通讯作者30篇),其中JCR一区论文15篇。论文SCI引用1900余次,单篇最高SCI引用692次,H-index为17。获得外部基金资助高达90万欧元和130万新币。担任Scientific Reports、Enzyme and Microbial Technology和Bioelectrochemistry国际期刊编委,入选国际微生物电化学与技术学会亚太区Board Member。
