学者论坛:Design and fabrication of cost-effective thin Si solar cells

  Over the past few decades, crystalline silicon (c-Si) solar cells have dominated the global photovoltaics (PV) market with above 90% share. Although the module cost has been reduced in the past tens of years, expensive cost is still a main obstacle for c-Si solar cells to compete over fossil-fuel based energy. At present, commercial c-Si solar cells are typically based on 180 µm-thick Si wafers, however, the cost of the Si material alone accounts for up to 40% of total module cost. Hence, developing thin c-Si photovoltaics becomes an alternative technology roadmap, which can significantly drive the cost down with a unique advantage of cost-effectiveness. In this talk, I will introduce a brief overview of Si solar cells first and then present our recent research progresses on thin c-Si PV including the design and experimental fabrication. Very recently, we proposed a conceptual methodology and strategy using Si photonic crystals to achieve ultrahigh-efficiency ultralow-cost ultrathin Si solar cells, which opens a fully new research direction.

  七、主讲人简介:

  Wensheng Yan is working at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology of Germany as a Group Leader of Nanostructured Photovoltaics. His current research interest includes 1st, 2nd, and 3rd generation silicon solar cells. He was the recipients of highly prestigious Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) Postdoctoral Fellowship (2012) and Humboldt Research Fellowship for Experienced Researchers of Germany (2016). At present, he serves as regular reviewers for more than 20 international academic journals. Part of his research results have been applied to the Si PV industry. Currently, he is also a distinguished professor of Chongqing University of Posts and Telecommunications, China. His research achievements in the area of thin Si PV have been reported and highlighted by hundreds of newspapers and internet media, and attracted great attentions in Si PV industry.
